Abstract

Malioboro, as a tourist icon of Yogyakarta, plays an important role as a center of tourism and a space for Javanese culture. However, the intensity of tourist activities and modernization have put pressure on cultural preservation and environmental quality. This study aims to formulate strategies for preserving Javanese culture based on green infrastructure in the Malioboro area of Yogyakarta. The methods used are descriptive qualitative with the support of spatial analysis, policy document analysis (RTRW, RTBL, and RIPPARDA), and SWOT analysis. Data was obtained through field observations and planning document reviews. The results show that Malioboro has potential in the form of well-organized pedestrian paths, local vegetation such as tamarind and gayam trees, cultural heritage buildings, and environmentally friendly traditional modes of transportation. However, this area faces problems such as limited green open space, space conflicts due to activity density, the presence of motorized rickshaws that are displacing cultural icons, and the risk of environmental degradation due to modernization. The SWOT analysis formulates strategies to strengthen Malioboro as a sustainable cultural tourism destination through the optimization of spatial planning policies, the revitalization of vegetation and public spaces, the control of illegal motorized transportation, and the development of the concept of green cultural tourism. The integration of green infrastructure and Javanese culture is considered important to improve ecological quality while strengthening the identity of the area.
